painting photography

I'm falling hard for painting. When I am painting I feel these fleeting moments of weightlessness. These moments vanish and are balanced with a struggle to unite my hands with my brain. This back and forth frustrates me in wonderful ways. I am very much inspired by the work of Luc Tuymans and Marlene Dumas.
Marlene Dumas, Jen

Luc Tuymans, Portrait

Tuymans particularly intrigues me because of his relationship with photography. He draws upon photographs to construct his paintings. He recognizes himself a painter, but is intrigued with the photographic process, even having dabbled with film. I feel like I found his work at an appropriate time. I am trying to explore possibilities, and seem to have taken a shift from photography.

However, walking in downtown with the weather the way it has been is making me miss my photo-hunt-adventures. Life is constantly full of potential adventures.

This blog is a procrastination from a painting I am to be working on.

gsp airport

I am sinking in the seats of the Greenville/Spartanberg Airport. I am trying to observe all of the goings on around me, and I am desperately trying to be of the utmost neutrality while I am here.

Who are these people? The lives of these varying employees of the airport seem so interesting right now, I'm careful not to alter anything. The characters range from the gift shop manager pushing plush animals to the people going around me now shaking the branches of tress to free the dead leaves. Being here reminds me of this episode of This American Life where they interviewed the employees of this rest stop on the New York State Thruway (listen to the episode!).

I'm not sure why the airport is having a particularly existential effect on me today, but I feel fluttered with nerves. I generally enjoy flying. To me it is time travel, and an aspect of technology which I respect.

I want to sketch some of the characters which I have encountered, but am too lazy.

Instead I will give a description of the individuals I had wished to sketch here in this blog, and leave it at that.

Perhaps one day my mind will revisit this memory and I will make something with that.

The Gift Shop Manager - portly, blondish hair, with an awkward mustache. His hands seemed too small for his body, and he was nervously rearranging the plush "Ty" toys while talking to these two women. "We just got this order in last week, and they've been selling very well!" "My favorite is the koala."

The girl in the art space - average height, medium straight hair, puffy blue jacket, tight jeans, and boots over the jeans. "I want to look at the pictures". "Purple and grey are the popular colors this year".

The man at the restaurant - Big face, older man, worn face. He had the kind of nose you get from years of drinking alcohol. He turned to me and said, "I think your hat is cute." As he turned away he had a wet cough/laugh. He was wearing a big "trucker" styled hat that said veteran on it with four gold stars.

I'm going to miss the mountains in my peripheral vision.

This blog has little/nothing to do with photographs.
